Today, selling can be a difficult profession to be successful in with the growing online market. Instead of coming into the store, consumers are doing more and more research and purchasing online. Some businesses are giving consumers a discount or extra incentives to buy online because they don't have to pay their salespeople for the sale. I have seen this at places like Verizon and Staples, and the list is growing more by the day. How will the sales profession survive in a climate like this?
Salespeople need to become their own marketers, or find somebody that can do their marketing for them. They need to make sure that the consumer finds them online before they find their competitors who urge them to shop online. More importantly, they need to show the consumer that there is great value in shopping with a salesperson. The Sales Professional is a valuable resource that can help the consumer find all of their options and make the right decision. I know that I can't count on both hands the amount of times that I went into the store intending to buy a particular product but the salesperson helped me find another product that would fit my specifications better.
The average consumer does not know that buying from a salesperson helps both the individual salesperson as well as the company that they work for. When they buy online it only helps the company and not an individual. For any consumer who is reading this, I will also urge you to find a small business to buy from if it is available to you. When you buy from a small business or a privately owned business you are helping the local economy and the individuals who will then buy from your business.
